3D printing is increasingly being adopted in a wide selection of fields and Healthcare is where it is having a major impact on people’s personal lives.
One major field in healthcare that 3D printing is having a major effect is in Orthopedic surgery where doctors are printing 3D scans of patients bones to practice surgery.
In South Africa, Doctor Rudolph Venter from Stellenbosch University can be seen in the video helping setup up the Bolt Pro 3D printer at Tygerberg Hospital where they have opened a 3D printing Lab.
Dr Venter has one of our printers at Stellenbosch and has been using it to research the possible applications and also to help patients in getting better healthcare that both reduces risk and improves their recovery.
Why Hospitals are choosing 3D Printers like the Bolt Pro
The reason for additive manufacturing being adopted in this field is many doctors were previously limited to 2D scans of a patient’s injury. They only had this to try and estimate how to proceed with a procedure.
Although there are various imaging technologies available, this was very limited in scope.
The advent of 3d printing means doctors have something tangible to accurately gauge a patient’s injury.
Additionally, with 3D models, doctors can practice the surgery accurately and simulate possible options, changes and how best to proceed to achieve maximum success.
3D Printing not limited to Hospitals.
The advantage of 3D printing is due to its lower costs than many other technologies, these uses can also be used in medical schools. Students can also benefit from the low cost of 3D printing to help their studies and learning how to perform better surgeries as explained by Dr Venter.
